5 Reasons a Professional Email Address Will Make You More Money
Do you use a gmail or a yahoo email address for your business instead of a professional email address?
I get why. Those addresses are free, easy to setup and easy to use.
But not using a professional email address holds back your business.
Google hired Zogby Analytics to survey 500 young business owners. If you want to read the whole report, it’s here: Young Business Survey Report.
Zogby Analytics asked the young business owners what happened when they switched to a professional email address.
And the business owners’ answers were staggering.
60% of young businesses saw an increase in customer engagement; 42% said they saw an increase in sales after switching to a professional email address.
60% of small business owners said their customer engagement increased.
And even more impressive, 42% saw an increase in sales in the first year after their switch.
42% is incredible. All that just from changing your email address.
That information alone is enough to make it worthwhile to sign up for your own professional email address.
You can sign up with HostGator by clicking on this link: HostGator.com.
And it’s only $4.95 per month and you get a professional email address and a website.
That sounds like a good investment to me. $4.95 per month to increase your sales.
Fair disclaimer here. I make money from HostGator if you sign up through that link.
You don’t pay any extra but HostGator pays me an affiliate commission if I bring them business.
It’s a win for HostGator and win for me.
But most importantly, it’s a win for you because you make more money.
But if you don’t want to give me an affiliate commission or even use HostGator, please sign up with someone.
It’s that important for your business and your wallet.
Before we dig into why a professional email address increases your sales, you need to know what one is as defined by Google and Zogby Analytics .
What is a Professional Email Address?
Establishing a professional email address— that is, an email address that uses a business name after the “@” symbol (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org).
That’s a quote from the survey. So it is an email address with your company name after the “@” sign in your email address.
For example, my professional email address for Finance Footing is email@example.com and it’s not firstname.lastname@example.org.
Don’t get me wrong, a Yahoo email address is great just not for your business.
Also, you should notice that my email address is not email@example.com it is firstname.lastname@example.org.
You want to make sure you include your name in your company email address. It builds trust.
So your professional email address should be email@example.com.
Now let’s dig in to why a professional email address increases your sales.
1. A Professional Email Makes a Great First Impression
You ever hear the saying, “You only get one chance to to make a first impression?”
Well that applies here too. Your email address on makes an impression.
So it’s really important to make a great first impression when you hand someone your business card.
Financefooting@yahoo.com doesn’t pop like firstname.lastname@example.org does.
2. A Professional Email Address Builds Trust
I’ve managed business for 10 years. I contacted, networked and built relationships with hundreds of companies.
I hired everyone from air conditioning repairmen to roofers, plumbers, painters, builders and real estate brokers.
Every time I swapped business cards with someone and saw a personal email address, I threw it in the trash after the meeting.
You know the email address. Charliespainting@yahoo.com instead of Charlie@charliespainting.com.
Charlie lost all trust with a Yahoo account.
Fair or not, I didn’t trust Charlie enough run a company professional enough to do great work.
So he didn’t get my business.
The stupid thing is getting your own professional email address for your company only costs $4.95 per month.
And you get your own website.
This is what the HostGator home page looks like. Cloud Hosting or WordPress Hosting will probably be enough for you.
To give you an idea, I use HostGator and FinanceFooting.com costs $14.95 per month to run.
The only start up cost I incurred was $20.00 for a domain name. You can’t beat that.
It’s cheaper than my gym membership.
$14.95 per month for instant trust and an opportunity to make a great first impression.
That sounds like a good deal to me even if it’s not as good as your $4.95 per month.
$14.95 is even good enough that I’ve been too lazy to call and ask for a discount.
3. It Means You’re Capable of Handling Large Business
When you see a gmail or yahoo email address, what do you think?
You think that it’s a one man business that can’t handle much business at one time.
So he doesn’t get your business.
But if he has a professional email address, you think he can handle a lot of business.
It may not be true, but it’s perception.
And as the saying goes, “Perception is reality.”
So why wouldn’t you change people’s perception about your company?
4. A Professional Email Address Shows You Have Proper Insurance
What’s worse than hiring an unprofessional company with an unprofessional email address?
Hiring one that doesn’t have proper insurance and can’t afford to fix a mistake.
Nothing like having a tree contractor cut down a tree only to have it land on my house.
And then finding out he doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the damage or injuries.
I don’t need that kind of risk. So I won’t take it.
And I won’t give you my business so you miss out on making money.
5. A Professional Email Address Makes Customers Happier
This one surprised me. In the Young Business Survey Report, Google and Zogby Analytics found this key point from their respondents:
The majority of respondents (59%) said a professional email address has a high impact on customer trust, with half (50%) of respondents saying such an email address has a high impact on having happy customers.
Half of the people surveyed said their customers were happier when they switched their email address.
That seems like $4.95 well spent.
At this point you shouldn’t have any reason stop you from switching to a professional email address.
But there’s always a chance you still have excuses not to switch.
I can think of 5 objections you might still have and I discuss them here.
5 Objections You May Have to Changing Your Email Address
Change is hard. I don’t like change and I bet you don’t like change either.
But if you always do the same thing, you will always get the same results.
So let’s dig into your objections.
1. It Costs Too Much For Me
It’s not as expensive as you think. You can easily get a professional email address and a website with HostGator for $4.95 a month.
If you get $10 in additional monthly net income from the email address switch, you double your money.
I bet you only need one sale to make $10. So that’s a low hurdle.
There’s no such thing as a sure thing in business but this is as close as it gets.
So make the investment. Even if it’s not with HostGator, sign up with someone to make your additional money.
2. I Have No Time to Set Up a Web Site
You’re pressed for time. I get that and you should be busy.
You’re running your business.
But I’ve got good news, it only takes 5 minutes and here’s a video from HostGator to help.
HostGator calls it a blog but that’s the same thing as a website.
The only difference is with a blog, you just update it a lot more.
3. I Don’t Have the Technical Skill to Setup a Website
You’re not a computer expert and I’m not either.
It’s a good thing for us that HostGator has a great help staff and a 24/7 live chat function.
Just click here: HostGator Live Chat to start a live chat.
They will guide you through the process of starting your own website and getting your new email address.
4. My Existing Customers Are Comfortable With my Yahoo Email Address
Great news. They can still email you at your old email address.
You can automatically forward your emails from your existing address to your new address.
This way your existing customers can get comfortable with your new address before they switch.
And this isn’t the United States Post Office so you don’t ever have to stop forwarding your emails.
You’ll have to do this through your personal email provider so it’s different for each one.
You can Google how to forward your emails and it should be pretty simple.
5. But I Am Comfortable With My Yahoo Email System and Don’t Want to Switch
This doesn’t have to be Yahoo Mail. This could be any personal email account you use for business.
Your comfortable with your current email system and you don’t like change.
Trust me, I understand. I don’t like change either.
But I’ve got good news. You don’t have to switch your system.
You can send your emails from your professional email address through Yahoo or Gmail.
It’s a little technical though so you might need help.
Go ahead and start a HostGator Live Chat to do that.
If you’re technical enough, you can Google how to do it.
But you will have to set it up on both email addresses.
So now that you are excited about starting your business website and professional email address, let me show you how to start your own website.
4 Steps to Start Your Website and Get Your Professional Email Address
Starting a website is pretty easy. Here are 4 simple steps to do it.
Step 1. Choose a Hosting Plan
Choosing a hosting plan is the first step. HostGator stores all your text, images and videos that you post to your website.
This is what the HostGator homepage looks like. You’ll need to select the plan that works best for you.
If you are having trouble selecting the right plan, HostGator agents are happily available in a Live Chat to assist you.
Step 2. Choose a Domain Name
This should be pretty easy for your. It is your business name.
So http://www.yourbusinessname.com is your domain name. If that’s not available, modify your business name slightly to get a .com address.
A .com address is better than all the others.
Also stay away from numbers in your address.
If that’s not possible, go with .net.
This is what the domain selection page looks like. Just plug in your domain name without the http:// and it will let you know if the address is available.
Step 3. Install Your Content Management System
The most popular content management system is WordPress.
A content management system makes it easy to manage your website without knowing how to use html code.
If you are struggling with this section, I suggest you click on the “Walk Me Through” tab on the bottom right corner of the page.
Someone from HostGator will help you through the process of installing WordPress.
It’s always easier when you get live help from the customer service representatives.
You’ll also need to install a theme to get your site up and running.
Finance Footing’s theme is Hemingway. It’s free and easy to use.
Step 4. Create Your Professional Email Address
Finally, we’re at the part that makes you more money.
Click on the “Hosting” tab in your Customer Portal.
Then click on the gray cog and then click on “Email Accounts.”
The “Email Accounts” page will look like this:
Then just click on “Create a new email account.”
Create the your new email account.
And now you have your professional email account.
I know this is a lot to take in and it’s probably overwhelming.
But $4.95 per month and a few minutes of your time will increase your sales.
And increasing your sales will make you more money.
Who doesn’t want more money?
So don’t wait and sign up with HostGator.
But if you don’t want to take my advice to sign up with HostGator, sign up with someone.
Your non-professional email address is holding back your business.
So what’s holding you back from making the switch?
